Meet Me At The Nightingale by Andrew Sharpe
This charming short play by Andrew Sharpe echoes an ‘afterlife’ theme that has run throughout this festival. Sharpe’s take on the genre is refreshing in its simplicity and opens with an engaging conversation between an old man and a young woman in a cafe, the celebrated Nightingale Cafe of the title. The woman seems in distress and the man appears to be waiting for his wife. Sharpe’s easy written style creates two well-rounded characters and the warmth of the dialogue helps establish empathy, no little thanks to strong performances from both Paul Manuel and Emma Watson . The denouement, which establishes on the journey of the soul rather than the end-of-life is as much a surprise as it is up-lifting.
Highly Commended
